Well , today I finally got rid of all 4 of my damsels.
got a 2 dollar credit on each & put it towards another Perculla. So I now have a pair of percs again. They're both doing really good, no fighting at all, took right to each other & are just hanging around now. If any one remembers I lost 1 Perc after moving & suspected 1 or all the damsels as the murderer.
tank specs are updated but not tank pic. ( gimmie time :) )
Of course the wife wasn't happy when she seen the damsels gone, she don't understand.
So know I want advice on what else to put with my pair of percs.
I know the tank is not as big as i would like it to be but i'm stuck there for now.

Oh, added 2 peppermint shrimp 2 weeks ago.

I would love to get a Manderin Goby, but I know the tank is too young & I need about double the live rock I have. Any suggests on that ?

hmmm... well, here's an interesting combo:

2 (Pair) Percula Clownfish
1 Banggai Cardinal
1 Tiger Pistol shrimp
1 Hi Fin Red Banded Goby

The shrimp and the goby will partner up - pretty cool thing.

as for the mandarin, you really need to wait 6 months to a year (i recommend a year) and have plenty of GOOD, THRIVING live rock. Also, make sure there's nothing else in the tank to compete with the mandarin for pods to eat. Also, you should get some pods in there and have them start multiplying before you put the mandarin in there so the pods can establish a colony for the mandarin to eat.

Thanks Ben,
I knew I'd be waiting a long time for the mandarin goby. & i seen a site were you could buy all U need to get a pod colony going. Eventually though, I'm really trying to take it slow now, & man is it hard to be patient. Next week I should have better lighting about 71 watts compact florecents. It's all I can afford for know.
20 dollar used ballast that came w/ (1) 28watt 50/50 acitic?? Blue&white
ordered another 28 watt 10,000k daylight this morn for $16.95
I know it ain't a lot but may be I'll see something start to happen on the rock soon. :)
Is 15 lbs of LR NOT enough 4 the mandarin ? How do you think would be enough ? 30 lbs ?

Upgrading slowly here, I'd love a bigger tank but thats another battle w/ the misses. :)

never seen a red banded goby. got any pics ?

Mandarin gobies seldom accept prepared foods, and are predators on the micro-crustaceans (pods) in a tank. Without lots and lots of live rock, or a refuge that allows the pods to reproduce without disruption, few small tanks can provide enough pods to feed a mandarin. They will decimate the pods in short order.

can anyone show a picture of what one of these pods looks like? i thought i saw one in my tank the other day. a little white looking critter that looks like a big fireant, only white with an antena???? sorry drew, im not trying to post steal!!!

Copopod diagrams.

Amphipods are a bit larger than copopods.

just curious, why do you have to wait so long before getting a gobi????

Just to clarify what Oriongirl said; Buggapimp, Mandarin Gobies are different from say, your neon goby or firefish goby or some shrimp goby. They are actually classed in a more specific category called the "Dragonets". They are a completely different species from the rest of the gobies, but the dragonets to most people resemble gobies, so they are uncorrectly classified with gobies. It's just a wierd name they got. Some people call them Mandarins, some call them dragonets, some call them gobies. kinda like how some people call dottybacks instead of pseudochromids. It's all just different, confusing common names. That's why we have scientific names.
