I have been anxiously awaiting my new fish, and they arrived today! 6 healthy looking juvenile Celebes Halfbeaks. These are an albino strain, and are very unique looking fish. I had never even seen halfbeaks before today. They are VERY slowly being acclimatized to my water conditions, since I've read they are quite sensitive to fluctuations in ph.

The water in their bag is a blue color, and I'm curious what may have been added to it. I've heard of methylene blue, but that's for fungus I think so I can't imagine that would be it. Could anyone explain this?

Well, I'm off to add a bit more water to their bag. This is so exciting! :D

Hound - I won them on aquabid. It was my first time bidding on an auction, and it went very well. I was actually surprised that I was the only bidder.......would've thought more people would be interested in them. I'm not complaining though :)

I had them shipped overnight, and although I was a bit worried (never bought fish online before), they arrived on time and seem to have survived the shipping perfectly well. Great experience overall.

I don't think I'll be buying fish from the local stores anymore (with the possible exception of one). Their selections are terrible, and I don't care for the overcrowded conditions and general poor health of the stock.

Sounds cool. I've been looking about online as well as a source for some kinds of fish on which cost of shipping won't bother me. Keep posting as to their progress cause I'm interested in how it goes.

The blue water is probably the same Additive they use to transport baitfish and keep them in the stores, I am drawing some big blanks right now so I can't tell you waht it actually is. It could also be clout, which is kind of a cure-all med that some people/suppliers are very fond of. It has instructions as a disease preventative for transport and q-tanks. some people buy into this big time and if it has no ill effects it's hard to argue with them. I used to use it a lot, and don't know that if it helped or not, but it never hurt.

There is a pill called "bag buddies" made by Jungle and this helps the fish transport, apparently does a variety of things; like reduces stress, promotes slim coat, removes chlorine and nueutralizing harmful metals. In addition provides oxygen in bagged fish and reduces ammonia. When I purchased fish recently, I seen this in a liquid form, unfortunately, it does not say what it is...only what it does.
It has worked well for me personally.

Update

I figured it was probably something to reduce stress during shipment. Hard to say if it helped or not, but it sure didn't seem to hurt.

The fish are all in the tank now and doing well. I was worried that my honey gouramis might pick on them, but they are getting along great. Even though the halfbeaks are nearly the same length as the gouramis, they are less than 1/4 of the overall size. They stay on the surface, with the exception of one that seems to like the lower levels of the tank. It doesn't seem sick, so I'm assuming it's just it's personality.

These are by far the most unique fish I have ever owned. It's amazing to watch how they eat.....the bottom jaw doesn't move, just the "half" upper jaw. One of them stole a piece of dried daphnia right out of my gourami's mouth! Stuck it's beak right in there and snatched it away........the gourami didn't know what to think :D

they dont treat the bags everything comes from tanks that are already treated and well kept. what the blue is .. is pure liquid oxygen for trasport so u dont have casualties on long shipping periods. a buddy of mine let me know when i bought a whole shipment of fancies and took the bag that they were shipped in. he explained the process to me. hope that helps
