ideal gal tank set up ?

i'm assuming you mean equipment? and i'm assuming (by your link) that your tank is 48"?

Here's what i'd go with:

lighting - some good power compacts, since you only want FOWLR there's no need for Halides, VHO, etc.
Coralife PC lights
CustomSeaLife PC lights

skimmer - i'd go with an aquac remora

heater - i'd go with ebo*jager on this one. probably a 250W?

powerheads - get some maxijets. can't tell you how many gph off the top of my head.

also u need a hydrometer or refractometer and some test kits. There are a couple of good testing suppliers i can think of off the top of my head - seachem being one of them.

you will also need your instant ocean salt (i'd go with their hydrometer too)

some subtrate - old kastle aragonite

maxi jet 1200s do 295 gph. The aqua c remora isn't rated 90 gallons so you may need 2 of them. I have 2 250w titanium heaters in my 75 it's too much but better safe than sorry if one goes on me.


That's a nice price on the 90.
 
from what i have read on here LR and Lsand is always the way to go, provided you have the right amount of LR. alot of the set ups that i have seen are nothing more than LR, Lsand and a protein skimmer. by all means someone tell me im wrong if i am, im still learning myself.

well i guess i am hoping that a prizm pro deluxe protein skimmer( type that hangs on the back of the tank) rated for a 300 gallon tank with a bunch of live rock and sand will be enough for my new 90 gallon tank.

i already bought a emp 400 bio wheel filter off ebay so i can't really return it , sapose i could try and sell it though . guess i am wondering what the dissadvatages of useing it would be or should i save it for a quarantine tank ? is there any real use i can have for this or should i just i just get rid of it ?
 
i have never actually used anything with a biowheel. but i think the reason is that they tend to raise the nitrate levels in your tank after a while.

There is no need for anything more than LR and Sand with a protien skimmer on a 90 I have had larger with just that and been fine. In fact most Wet/Drys are nitrate factories and can cause major problems for your corals.

You are right on with the biowheel it will end up being more trouble than worth with the nitrates. The LR and Sand will provide sufficient area for your bacteria no need for the biowheel.


Snarkys,

You can run your emp 400 with no media for circulation if you like. Personally though 3-4 powerheads about maxi 1200 size should do it depends on the dimensions of your tank. The Prizm skimmer should work well for you if you are unable to go with the sump, the Aqua C Remora Pro is probably the best hang on I have seen for larger tanks though. About 150 lbs of rock and a 3-4 inch sand bed and I would say you are ready to go.
