I have a Tetra Whisper C filter, and im getting horrible backup. The bio-bag is pretty fresh, and that isnt what the problem is.
I know its not the problem because if I lift the bio bag out, the filter is still almost overflowing.

The backup is from the black sponge that sits opposite the bio-bag. It is covered with a green gooey gunk, and then there are some white spots on it(?) The white seems like a mold, as its on the inside of my hood, and on the inside of the filter housing. Anywho, what should I do to clean the black sponge? I don't wanna rinse it under water because it says that will kill valuable bacteria...

What should I do?

Thanks

Put some tank water in a bucket and clean the sponge in it. Just shake it around in the bucket to get most of the gunk off of it. That won't kill the bacteria on it.

I give my sponges some good squeezes in your situation. The green gooey gunk is probably some algae growing and contributing to the clogging of the sponge. Everytime you do a partial water change, it is a good idea to rinse the bio bag and the sponge in the water to prevent their clogging.
