Ok, I get to stock one of my friends fish tank, and I need some opinions. I want to stock it with Zebra Danios, a Betta, a couple of Platys and maybe a school of something else. Now, my questions are... Are Zebra Danios fin nippers? I can't remember. I want to get a bottom feeder for her tank, what would you recommend? And what type of fish should I get for the other school? It is a 20 gallon high with a Whisper Power Filter.
I am also going to get Zebras for my tank too. It will house 4 Platys and 3 Swordtails.
If the Zebras are fin nippers, can you recommend something that isn't. She is looking for a lot of color. I told her to get some Tetras, but I a pretty sure that they are fin nippers, will someone correct me if I am wrong please :) Thanks for any suggestions :)

Danios do tend to be fin nippers.

How about this?

1betta
10 glowlights or cardinals or neons
4 oto cats (once the tank starts developing algae and is of course cycled)
4 cories

HTH

The tank is already cycled... it's still setup in my house. I am just waiting for her to give me the money for it. With the already been cycled gravel, filter and decorations, it shouldn't take too long to fully cycle it. I like that setup Puma. Thanks for the suggestions.
Now, what could I put in mine with the Platys and Swordtails? Or is that enough? Mine is also a 20 gallon high. I love being able to stock new tanks :D The reason that I need to know what can go woth platys and Swordy is because I already have those. DO NOT suggest Mollies. I already have those and I am giving them back to the pet shop, they are Black Mollies and I too want more color :)

I have heard of zebra danios nipping fins and have kept them for years with no aggression. However I think they are too fast and erratic moving for a 20 gallon anyway.

For bottom feeders I suggest kuhli loaches. I like them a lot more than cories and they will work well in those tanks.

For colour in a 20, I think platies, cardinal tetras, harlequin rasboras, dwarf gouramies, and smaller barbs are your best bets.

as i have stated before, when i was younger, i scouped out all my zebra danios and urinated on them, then flushed. they can be terrors, and then can be chilled out.. like most semi agressive fish

Why am I not suprised by Hans response. Do you often play target practice???:p :p :p

Anyways, I haven't had problems with my zebras but I read that if you keep them in a school of at least 6 they will chase each other.

Tetras can definately be fin nippers and some can be sensitive to water changes. But again if you keep them in a school of at least 6 they will most likely chase each other. Also make sure there are plenty of plants and things to hide in.

I have never had any luck with Khuli Loaches and I love them. They are way cool to watch. I would love advise on keeping them.

I like Leopard catfish (Corydoras Julii) They are white with black spots. If you keep them in a group 3 or 4 they can be quite entertaining.

I hope I have helped a little.
Letty:D

My thought would be something like 8 harlequin raspborra, 1 betta, and a bristlenose cat. Sometimes it really depends upon the owner and what they want though.

I like this responce, mainly because if they die, she won't be out a bunch of money. Another plus is that I showed her a bunch of different fish last night and she really liked the Harlequin Rasboras. All I know is that she keeps telling me that she wants a Betta really bad cause she loves mine :D, and thats why I came here, because I didn't have a clue what to have her get. You have all helped a great deal :) Thanks

interesting, I've had zebra danio's for a while with no problems. Never heard of them being fin nippers. A problem I did have though was when I put a pair of bettas in my 55 gallon tank. the male would flare at any fish it's size like platies, mollies, etc. He got removed after a couple days because he would never quit chasing the female betta. After he was removed I started having guppies disappear. Finally one night I caught the female betta killing a guppy at the bottom of the tank. I have not had good luck with bettas in community tanks but there are many people who have. It all depends on the individual fish so be prepared to remove the betta to a bowl or some sort of betta display tank that hangs on the edge of the aquarium. the danio's are fast moving but don't bother any of my platies or mollies. As far as swordtails, for some reason I've never been able to keep them alive. I don't know what the deal is but they hide from the moment we get them and after a week at the most they are dead.
