pretty sure my black tetra died, but i can't seem to find it anywhere. don't fish usually float to the top? i checked the rocks. possible for it to dig in the gravel? i have 3 yellow tetra's and one pitbull pleco in the tank.
I usually try to net them out BEFORE they die. When they die in the tank, you can get an ammonia spike.
Good luck to you, though. Don't worry about not finding it. Either it's been eaten, or in a few weeks you'll see a fuzzy white glop of what used to be your tetra floating around, being eaten by fungus.
You know I have rarely seen a dead fish float. They are either stuck on the bottom or against the intake of the filter. And if given enough time, as was mentioned by Cearbhaill, the other fish will help take care of them.
I have only had this happen once and it was a small fish...I found a dead fish in my filter once. I would watch for an ammonia spike for the next few days. If you all of a sudden have big water problems then you will know it is still in there. HTH
I'm betting the pleco had lunch. it doesn't take long, especially for something like a tetra, to disappear. I had a mystery snail devour a 3" fish in a few hours. don't worry about it, It's probably gone. Kyle
I had the same thing happen to me while I was on vacation. One of my guppies died and the rest of his tank mates had him as a snack. Sad, but it happens.
