My uncle is gving me 5 of his tiger barbs due to incompatibility in his tank.

I know my tank is too small to house the tiger barbs permanently, I just need to story it for a month till I graduate (after graduation I'm picking up a 125 gallon tank).

Right now my 10 gallon tank have 2 cories and I'm wondering if the tiger barbs will be ok to live in there for a month? The tank is planted and have a couple of hiding spots

Some of the tiger barbs are pretty badly injured.

I think I can find a 2-3 gallon tank to house the cory for a month if they are definitely incompatible.

Also, the tiger barbs are about 1.5 big. I know I'm pushing the limit on the tank.

Anything other than the cories in there? The cories will be mostly overlooked by the barbs. They will spend most of thier time chasing each other. Are they beat up from another fish, or from each other?

In my tank its just going to be barbs and cories (got no more neons left :(). The tiger barbs got beat up by Kenyi Cichlids.

My uncle disregarded my advice and got the cichlids with his tiger barbs. The tiger barbs are about 1/2 inch smaller than the cichlids. Originally there were 6 tiger barbs, one died because it got teamed up by 4 kenyi cichlids and got ripped apart.

Okay. The barbs will beat each other up a bit, but not as bad as the cichlids. You should be okay, but will need to do quite a few water changes for the first couple of weeks, as the bacteria beds catch up with the new bio-load. I'd probably continue with this pattern even after the mini cycle, just to keep the water in good shape since it will be a bit crowded.

OK, while it may not be OPTIMAL, we all have to make decisions and sacrifices at times, and if you have nothing else to keep them in, then you could keep the cories with the barbs.

Barbs are just notorious fin-nippers. Anything they can nip, they will. In My Opinion, they are not good community tank members because they limit the types of other fish you can have.

One of the most exciting things about keeping fish In My Opinion, is finding out about them by experience. Knowing that barbs are fin-nippers should tell you that you shouldn't necessarily keep slow moving long-finned fish with them, but m'dear, experience is the best teacher. If they start picking on the cories, well, then you'll know not to do that again.

my tank is a 36 but I have about 13 barbs along with a pair of cories and I don't think they've ever even noticed the cories. They even feed off the bottom for algae wafers but never chase eachother off. Being more cramped in the 10 could have different results but just keep an eye on them, it won't take them long to chase them if it's gonna happen. Your tank should be able to handle the bio-load once it's cycled for them. See if your uncle can loan you some filter media/sponge/decorations or something from his tank for a little while to help out. As mentioned, keep an eye on ammonia/nitrites and change the water. Barbs are pretty tough critters so they'll probably do ok. If they have open wounds, I'd try adding some salt and melafix. Kyle

Orion Girl & Snakeskinner are right.... you should be fine, but just do a few extra water changes for new bioload. I did not do this when I added a new school of cardinals and had one die. Water changes solved the problem and the bioload is caught up. This was in a 10 gal too. You can have a pretty good load in there, you just gotta compesate for it with water changes and live plants. In about a month all will be adjusted....

my tigers have not bothered anything in my 20 thats in there with them. I love watching them play with eachother the six of them just chase eachother they nip at but there fins are still all in tact and other than the occasional time do they even seem aware there are other fish in the tank. Its very heavily decoated with rock work.

Just an update with the tiger barbs.

I put the tiger barbs in my tank yesterday afternoon and this morning the dominant male was spawning with one of the females. It was completely unexpected of them to spawn and I was prepared, so I couldn't get a separate tank to house the tiger barbs. I saw the eggs drop but some of them got eaten by other barbs before they landed.

my tighr barbs nip at my corys tails when they are feeding but not all the time its not a bad problem
