Dropped the recommended amount in the tank and now it's all cloudy. That seemed to have the reverse effect of what I wanted.

Possibly it threw the bacteria inthe tank out of wack since there wasn't alage eating all that excess nutrient. This causes more bacteria to grow creates the bloom.
I would think its a bacterial bloom also. From what I've heard it isn't all that uncommon when using chemicals to combat algae.
I would do a big water change with a good gravel vacuum to get a lot of debris out then and wait at least a week. If it is bacteria it won't hurt the fish but constant water changes can actually (from what I have read here) cause the bloom to extend, especially if there happens to be a food source in your tap water. Eventually the bacteria will reach an equilibrium with their environment the water should clear. If not then post again and hopefully someone else has some betetr suggestions.
