I currently have a 40g stretched he tank with penguin 170 filter. The tank is slightly overstocked but all water parameters are good. Was wondering if it would be worth replacing fitler with emporer 400. Happier fish ? mbe able to add a fish or two? thoughts?

If it's already a little overstocked, adding a filter will not allow you to add more fish. Increasing the biological filtration available doesn't give the fish more room.

Happier fish yes, more fish, I wouldn't go there. Although it's possible to overstock to a tank with huge filtration, it generally creates a mutitude of other problems, and simply becomes a time bomb waiting to explode. If you like happy fish, avoid overstocking. The idea Of two filters vs one is IMO the best way to go. I use two minimum on all tanks. This is as much an insurance policy as it is extra filtration. The Emporer 400 would do a nice job if you aren't using CO2, and I am a big fan of these filters.

I think I would add an emporer 280 in addition to the penguin. I started with penguins and have really liked the upgrade to emporers due to their media baskets. Kyle
