My son has had a little 2.5 gallon aquarium since December. It came with a whisper filter and has two glo-light tetras. The other night I went into my sons' room and it smelled like a bucket of urine had been thrown in there. I sniffed around, yes -- I did look just as ridiculous as you might be imagining, and realized that it was the aquarium. I changed the water and filter and the smell was gone. Now today it was back. I treated for ammonia and went and bought a small air stone to aerate the tank. The smell is still there. I have had numerous aquariums, including my beloved 45 gal. hex, and I have yet to ever have such a problem with a tank. Can anyone help me? I would appreciate it!

if it smells like urine then its probably ammonia. There are some people (wierdos if you ask me) that will urinate in their tanks to start the nitrogen cycle.

Just do water changes and test for ammonia levels. Are the tetras okay? If there is too much ammonia, then it could be burning their gills.

are you using carbon? If not then ad some and do a partial water change. I cycled a 75g tank with 25 goldfish and the Ammonia levels were almost of the charts and I never smelled anything, I was using carbon as well.
