Hi everyone,

I've been looking at different types of heaters to go into my tank (when I get it) and believe that an undergravel heater might be the best option (judging from what I've read) with a spare submersable heater in case of failure.

I'm not sure if this type of heater is suitable in a tank with a DSB.

What do you think?

And what type of heaters do you use or would like to have?

Thanks

Adam

Opinions are divided on my choice of heaters :D
I only use Won Brothers digital LCD titanium heaters. I read a lot of posts about folks having problems with these, but I have had excellent results and I have a lot of 'em.
I love that you can't break them, I love that I don't have to remember to unplug them to do a water change, I love that the heater and sensor can be placed in separate areas, and I absolutely love the digital display.

I wouldn't use an undergravel heater--it will create more water movement through the sand than needed, reducing the DSB's ability to remove nitrates.

For medium-small tanks, I like Ebo's. For big systems, Pro Heat II has my vote. Not only are the titanium and indestructible, have the remote digital display and sensor probe, but they are easy to adjust and are very accurate. We have 2--one is dead on and rock solid. The other way way off--the display read 72 on a tank that was 68, and the heater was still coming on! After a call to tech support, the solution was easy, and it's now correct. Gotta' love things that you can tinker with and tune.

I have to agree with Cearbhaill on this one. I love the Won-Brothers LCD titanium digital heaters as well. For $40-$50, it's money well-spent and they work very well.

Ebos are okay, but I still would trust a Won before anything else.

After reading all of the glowing reports about Ebo-Jagers I did buy one last year. It works ok but the knob where you "dial" in the temperature is next to impossible to see in anything but perfect room lighting. Every time I wanted to check the setting I had to first go find a flashlight and a pair of glasses.
It went into the "fish closet" and I only pull it out if I need to heat up some stored water.

The Won Brothers (Pro Heat II- same thing) is just much more user friendly to an old lady who lost her reading glasses IME.

I have to agree that titanium is the way to go. I bought a Pro Heat II (Oriongirls recommendation) and my 55g has been pegged at 78 degrees since I added it. With my old one I was constantly adjusting the dial due to heat fluctuations.
