OK guys. I know you're probably tired of the undergravel filter thing, however, I'm confused. I had decided to get one for the 25 gallon tank I am getting on Saturday (yeah, finally!!). What I want to know is, do you buy the filter plates seperate from the power source (?? pump??) ? (really hope that makes sense). The undergravel filters that I have looked at, look like they have the plates and tubes running up. Do I have to buy the canisters seperately, or how exactly does this work? I am really sorry for this, but I just want to know what I need to look for. (Being a newbie really sucks!) Thanks for the help.

Usually the U/G filter kit comes with plate(s), & all the tubing you'll need for the job. You'll have to buy the power heads, or air pumps seperate. Talk to your local guy, and tell them that you are confused, ask to have them show you the inside of the box before purcase (you wanna check and make sure everything is there anyway). You'll have to cut the tubing to fit, which can be tricky depending on what you use for suction.
Hope thiat helps a little.

If I'm thinking right you'll need to have reversable powerheads. I think one of the more important things is to make certain the powerhead will fit the tube connecting to the UGF.

;) Great guys. Thanks for the info. I'll let you know how it goes.

Just my opinion, but I don't like UGF's.

Canister and Hang-on-Back of tank filters are much better.
I have heard that thorough vacuuming of the gravel will help keep the UGF going, but it must not be neglected...... I know I will never have UGF again - there are better options for filtration.
