Really, there isn't a magic number for this one. It depends on what you have in the tank, how often you clean it, what filtration is on there, feeding regimen, if it's planted, how big the tank is...You get the idea.

Most will suggest that a turnover on an average tank, not over stocked, with regular maintenance, would be good in the 5-7 X per hour range. Multiple filters, planted, and lightly stocked tanks can get away going lower. Having a few huge fish in a tank slightly too small, and you may want to boost that to 15-20 x per hour. Some fish prefer little to no current, others like swirling waters. It all depends.

Give us some more details on the tank, and we can help.

I'm pretty much in line with OG's comments. To me it is not possible to overfilter (all my tanks are multi-filtered), but you do need to be conscious of current. Current needs to matched to the fish and setup. But turnover volumes and current do not necessarily correlate as tightly as most folk assume - how the water returns are handled determines the current.
