i got a question about this. i am getting two maroon clowns tommorrow in the mail. i want to put them into my QT, i have to do what they call "drip method" which i syphon water out of my display tank into a 5 gallon bucket. my only problem is that they are going to be going into my 10 gallon QT not my main tank. i can exactly do a 5 gallon water change on my 10 gallon. could i use less water? like a 3 gallon?or possibly use 3 gallons from my main tank, and the rest from my QT? the parameters are pretty close. the QT has a little bit lower salinity, but not by much. everything else is pretty close to the same. any advice?

should i put the maroons directly in the display tank? since there are no other fish in there?

I'm confused by the question.

I would put as much display water in the q-tank as possible, then put new water in the display- just like a water change.

Your q-tank water can be 50% old water 50% new, or 25/75, or whatever. Get it mixed and ready first thing AM. Just be sure that when you acclimate you use q-tank water as that's where they'll be living for 4-6 weeks.

When new fish are floating I always test the water they came in for salinity and pH- and adjust the q-tank water to match.

Whatever you do I would not put the fish into your display tank until they have spent a minimum of 4 weeks in the q-tank. You never want to have to take out all of your rocks just to catch a fish- and that is exactly what would happen if you did not quarantine.

Use the q-tank time to observe your fish closely, bond with them, let them bond with each other, and teach them to eat from your hand. A good start here goes a long way.
 
k thank you :) im gonna do the drip method from my QT, then use 4 gallons of freshly made water.
 
they just came in this morning, the maroons are beautiful. a little on the small side, but thats how i wanted them. they came nicely packaged, and everything looks amazing. the maroons were swimming around, all happy looking. they only thing that worries me is that one of the pepermint shrimp molted. but he seems to be doing fine.
