I just purchased two oscars 3 days ago they are small still , I noticed some strange behavoir they seem to be skimming the top of the tank even though they have already been feed, they look like they are sipping water? they do this for long periods of time is this normal ?, would appriciate help I dont want any floaters I have become some what attached to them already, and yes I feed them regularly just afraid they are sufficating or something I have heard horror stories =( I am a first time fish owner

Gulp-they only have 2 oscars for 3 days;) but I agree with you-tielde start thinking about that big tank if you do not have it-the oscars grow very fast and need room.

it is a 10 gallon tank but they are still small? I will be getting a larger one soon , water is real cloudy today was clear yesterday after I did a 20 percent water change? an yes dumb me bought a small tank =(

Unfortunately, you called it Gulp, 10 gallons. Looks like a fine specimen in that avatar, by the way.

Tielde, you are not the first to jump in without looking. The ten will do for a little while. New tank, new fish? If so the tank is going through its ammonia cycle which usually takes 4-6 weeks to finish. Dissolved wastes can reach deadly levels during this time. Cloudiness probably a byproduct of this.

Might want to invest in ammonia and nitrite test kits which are the dangerous substances or have your LFS test. Keep up the water changes also and go easy on the eats. Get some filter media or gravel from your LFS (a healthy tank) to help seed yours and help the ammonia cycle along.

Did not tell us what type of filter yet.

How large is your new tank going to be?

just bought thrity five gallon will work for a little while ,bought ph indicator test and some nuetralizer seems the levels are fine now the fish went into big shock moving them still alive but just lying there trying catch their breath ( i hope) the played dead when I transfered them thought they were gonners ! still hoping they aren't , my filter is a whisper quiet one? guy at shop said it would work til I get another one ( hoping they live) they got alot more space got the tank longer so they would have more room to swim thanks for all of your help it is appricitated I see a far bigger tank in my future. and if this fails I'll try again

ya they are swimming around now I think it was a success one is eating and how many times a day u suppose to feed them? Im giving them flakes and blood worms
