I have an elderly neighbor that has decided to add a koi pond to his back yard. He came over to me for help setting up and etc because of my experience with aquariums. I explained to him that they are vastly different and that I would do some research and let him know. Now the question is what are some good books and/or websites and does anyone have any recommendations on manufacturers? "All-in-one" kits--good or bad? We are in north central Missouri so the winters can get pretty cold but not very long so im figuring possibly 3-4 feet deep. He wants to cover an area approximately 10' X 20'. He will most likely stock with Sarasa Comets and/or Shamunkin rather than the more expensive Koi.(he doesnt want fish that can be 2-3' long a few years from now:D )

There are a lot of good books out there - check out Barnes and Noble or your LFS. As for prefab, for that size, I'd go with a liner - don't know that you're going to find any kit that big. Beware the premade, thin, ponds that the big chain hardware stores sell. One small rock will put a hole through it in a heartbeat.

As for the winter, you won't freeze to a depth of 3-4', but it's more important that the top not freeze over. There must always be a hole for gas exchange. If it does freeze over, do not break the ice with a hammer or pick - the shock waves can kill the fish. Keep a watering trough defroster ready to plug in when it looks like the surface might freeze over - you can get one at any farm supply store. It will only kick on at freezing temperatures. I froze over here in December, so I'm sure you'll get it way up there in northern MO.
Good luck.

Without a question the BEST pond info site out there today is: www.fishpondinfo.com

I know Robyn personally, I recommend her to anyone who has a pond or who wants a pond. She's great!

PS: Does this neighbor know how much work a pond is? Ponds look relaxing, and when you see the pictures with a bench right next to it you might be inspired to get a pond... but, they are more work than any aquarium I have had!
