I have a Fluval 204 on my 29g planted tank. When I had my Penguin 125 on the back as well the water was crystal clear. I switched the Penguin over to my 10g puffer tank and now the Fluval isn't doing such a good job of keeping the water clear. There are particles suspended all over.

Currently I have bio rings in the top media tray and generic filter batting in the other two. I've cleaned the cannister out twice in the past two weeks and it hasn't helped. Is there another media I can throw in there to help with these particles?

I can't afford a water polishing filter and I'd really rather not add the Penguin back as its too much surface disturbance with all the plants in there.

add more batting. if your tank is heavily planted you probably wont even need the biofiltration. or get some carbon if your water is yellow.

Yeah, those two trays are packed with batting right now. I'm not too keen on removing the biorings even though the tank is heavily planted.

try putting a filterpad with smaller microns then or get a prefilter.

Ya know I found that my fluval, right where the intake is was full of junk. That little plastic ball tends to not let bigger stuff by, and thus starts getting clogged and all the sediment starts building up and eventually it cant clean the water, might be something to check out.
BTW another method I found to help is putting the exit right at the bottom, so anything stuck on the bottom gets sucked up and helps keep everything clean.

I would suggest you try using a prefilter sponge on the intake of your filter. Also you could try a micro filtration pad cut to fit in the middle tray of your set up. That is have filter floss on bottom, then a micro filtration pad in the middle, and the bio rings on the top layer.
