Hi everyone. Thanks again so far for all of the great reading and help provided so far. My tank is in good shape as I get ready to add a few fish.

I have a question about the amount of water flow that I currently have in my tank. I have a 75 gallon tank with an AquaClear 802 powerheads in both of the back corners of tank, with the outputs facing the front middle of the tank creating turbulence. Would you folks say that I had high, medium, or low water flow. It seems like a lot to me, but I really have no basis for comparison.

Next question. I have the Seaclone 100 skimmer, which I plan to ditch and go with a Remora, but not for awhile, as funds are starting to get a little tight with this marine endeavor. I am noticing that the tube that the bubbles travel up before spilling over into the collection cup is getting covered in really funky skimmate. Is this normal, or do I have the skimmer adjusted improperly, as I will let the thing run for days and it never seems to fill more than 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of the cup, even though I have the air valve almost completely open. In the beginning phase of using this skimmer, it would fill the cup with almost clear water if I left the air valve open as far as I do now. The liquid in the cup now is dark and nasty and stinky, so I know the skimmer is working somewhat better.

And lastly....

I am considering a sump for my tank to increase the water volume, and for the addition of a refugium to eat the nitrates. If was looking for something around 30 gallons:
1. Would that be considered overkill for a 75 gallon tank?
2. how cheaply could I build my own out of a 30 long tank?
3. what would I need ?

Would you folks say that I had high, medium, or low water flow.
I'd call it medium-low. It's about 10X tank volume her hour, which I consider to be a miniumum. Remember what the surge is like on a real reef.

Sounds like it needs a good cleaning. My skimmer pulls a lot less stuff when the intake to the collection cup gets too coated.

The rest:
1. 30 gallons is definitely not overkill.
2. Depends on how cheaply you can get the supplies. You might look in the classifieds and garage sales for some parts.
3. If I were doing it in a 30:
a. Overflow from main tank
b. some baffles, glass or plexiglass, to direct water flow
c. Return pump. Refugia don't need high flow, but it has to be able to deal with a few feet of head to get the water back.
d. playsand
e. Lighting. 55 watts of PC would be very nice. You might just get a 2 ft 40 watt shoplight.
e. some macroalgae, pods, worms, mysis, to start it going.

Well....after fighting a losing battle with getting my Seaclone 100 to work, I have bitten the bullet, and I just ordered my Remora Pro with the Mag 350 pump. Let the skimmage begin. :D
