Welp I now am no longer a water tank keeper I'm now a fish tank keeper. I'm not sure how this is going to work out in the long run but here's what I'm trying. I have 6 neon tetras and one male betta. So here's what it looks like. I have two bubble stones in there but everyone was gettting tossed arround so it's off unless I start having an O2 problem.

Here's my betta (not naming him... He'll die in a week if I do LOL) A question on him though. He flares at his reflection in one corner of the tank but only with one gill open. Should I be worried? Petco has a 15 day guarenty (really I tried spelling it right my brain just isn't working tonight). So I can return him if it's a bad thing. He seemed the most dosile one on the shelf so that's why he got adopted. The real shame though is there was a crown tail betta in the mix but he was even flaring at me when I picked up his cup. **** shame really he was one nice looking fish, but I'm sure he couldn't do a comunity tank.

And here's one of the neons. They seem to be checking the tank out and aren't schooling at all, but I think it may have to do with the fact I only picked up 6 for now to see how they fair with a betta and possible water chem swings. I'm hoping to make the tank all tetra's but I'm waiting for the Betta to show it's personality first. I have a 10G I can put him in if the need arrises.

So there it is. Wish me luck I'm most likely going to need it.

I've heard, no experience with it personally, that it's actually the betta's who may suffer from the tetras, if things get rough. Tetras being quick and nippy and the betta being big and finny. Ever notice that tetras look distictly pirrhanna-like?

Anyway, this doesn't even have the force of anecdotal, since it's second hand. But it comes from someone I consider fairly knowledgeable at the 1 lfs around here that actually seems pretty decent.

edit: almost forgot, nice tank, really nice

Very nice tank! At one time I had a 'school' of 10 neons... they never swam altogether, ever!! 2 or 3 would swim around together, some would be off on their own etc... I think it is partly due to their being comfortable in the tank (if they get scared they'll school, if they're comfy they won't). As a matter of fact, I've never had 'schooling' fish that schooled all the time!

I wouldn't worry about the betta flaring w/ one gill either. If he was sickly, more than likely he wouldn't flare at all!

Tank looks beautiful!! I love the sphinx/ancient egypt theme!

I wouldn't worry too much about the neons nipping the betta. I had the combination in my tank for a few months without any problems. My betta never really got nipped. Every so often during feeding time, a tetra will nip my betta (when the betta runs off with the shrimp pellets :D ), but no damage to the betta's fins.

it's normal for bettas to flare at their reflection, anyone approaching the tank (my cat), or if you set another tank next to it. I had a betta in my 55 for a while and he never noticed or bothered any of my many types of tetras and they never noticed or bothered him. I've never seen neon's nip at anything. As dwayne said, they really won't school unless they're scared. Mine never school unless I'm doing a vigorous vacuuming in the tank. My betta would flare at larger fish like mollies ,platies and the female betta and ended up killing all my guppies. Kyle
