I know that getting brown diatom algea is common during cycling from reading prior posts. I am currently seeing some appear in my tank, on the substrate and I am about 3 weeks into my cycle. I was wondering how long it stays around? If there is anything I can do to speed its exit from my tank? UV sterilyzer? limited light use? and will this be a problem after the cycle is complete?
Thank you for your help,
Doug

Manual removal from the glass, and then adding the clean up crew of shrimp, hermits, snails as soon as the tank is ready. They'll go through diatoms pretty quickly, and once there are sand stirrers and such around, it shouldn't be as noticable. I still have a little bit in my 10--it's about 2 months old now. But, I just swipe it off the glass every other week and the critters keep the sand and rock clean.
