I've killed my fifth clown in 3 months! My water parameters are great. my nitrates are < 10 and everything else is where its supposed to be. I had some trouble with hermit crabs but the few I have in there now are fine. My snails are fine and the yellow tang is good. The chromis seems to be fighting some kind of disease off. (the trouble with the clowns predates the chromis)

Is there something that I'm not testing for that is causing stress? Trace elements maybe?

Could there be some kind of organism in or on the rock that is stressing the clowns?

I don't want to tear it all down.

no they come from different sources. I got them in pairs...are they stressing each other out and becoming suceptible to diseases. the last one had popeye before he went. 1 died right away (2days) one lasted about 2 weeks the other two went betwee 5-10 days. They all had some fungus before they went.

I really don't know. I doubt if the clowns are stressing each other. Normally, they seem to benefit from having a partner once they figure out who's boss.

If there is some sort of disease, it wouldn't hurt to hold off on adding fish for a while. Let things stabilize and let possible pathogens die off. If the chromis recovers and gets back to normal, then it's a good sign.

Apparently, some parasitic isopods attach to fish at night, and scoot back to the rockwork during the day. I'm not sure this is true, but it may be worth sitting in front of the tank at night with some dim light and watching what's happening.
