started out all wrong...

couple of weeks ago I bought 12 feeder goldfish to put in our little pond outside, two died then my favorite was not looking well so I brought him inside, but he died anyway... I had the water tested and it was high in ammonia and PH

husband agreed to buy me a small (5gal) aquarium so I could bring them all inside so I got a kit, put in the Aquafresh, Cycle and Aquarium Salt, climatized the fish and put them all in, all 9 that were left.. what a mistake, too many fish for that small tank with no cycling. Right away I lost two more little ones, then another looked like it was going but it pulled through and looks fine now, thank the Lord for that. Then another died and now at two weeks into the cycle the remainder (6) look fine except for one that has started to close its fins so I expect he will be next to go. I did a 20% water change this morning, added some more cycle and waste control and they look good.

I am concerned about how high temperature they will be able to take. We are going away for a few days in a couple of weeks and if our temperatures go up it will get quite warm in the aquarium. also I am wondering about feeding. Being small fish, 1 - 2 inches, should they be fed every day? or every other day? or is it OK to leave them for the three days we will be away? I don't trust anyone to only feed them a little.. also if these six survive for a month, can I put in a ghost shrimp? or a frog?

Is it true that fish only grow to fit the size of the tank? or is that a myth? thank you in advance.

PS I am sooooooooooo grateful to have found this forum!!

thank you! that was very, very informative! now I know for sure I have way too many fish in such a small tank..

hopefully they will all live, but if not, well, at least I have learned from this experience.. going out now for an ammonia, and nitrite test kit (I have a nitrate kit and it is not showing any nitrates) and a heater.. that was helpful to know that they like a constant temperature..

thank you again for your help..
