I ran across an excellent book at the library that has great insights on fish behavior in the areas of dominance, etc. Explains what enables a fish to win a fight and how they size each other up. Lots of interesting case studies and experiments.

Fish Behavior in the Aquarium and in the Wild

Thanks both of you guys, I might have to check that out. I have a baby firemoth and and a baby Dempsey both in a 115g tank and believe it or not I'm getting a lot of flaring, and even some lip locking out of them. neither is hurting the other, but neither one seems to want to back down either.

Sounds like a great book. I'll have to look into it. Speaking of books, I had a small paperback book about 10 years ago, titled "Fish compatibility Guide" (or something like that). It just listed fish and gave them a rating on fin nipping and things like that. Has anyone seen a copy?
