View Full Version : Constantly changing items in tank?

Every week I syphon out 1/3 of the water from my 55gallon and replace it with fresh water. At first I would leave the tank alone, simply replace the water.

For the last 2 times I find myself trying to change things around, taking out plant, adding new rocks, re-arranging things.

I even redirected the powerheads so they flow the water in a different direction.

Am I the only one that does this? I think so!!!!!!!!!!

Below is a pic of my aquarium.

I did that on my 66 gallon malawi tank... went on for a few months before I finally settled down on a certain look... even now I find myself messing around with the decor every once in awhile =)

I think it took me close to 6 months before I finally stopped moving things around with every water change. I'd sit there and think about how a certain plant would look here or there, if it should be shorter/taller, rock walls, logs, etc.... Eventually, you settle on a "look" that you like and as Richer said, you still change things once in a while.

I moved my 350lb (empty) 150G tank to the other side of a room simply because it didn't look right. It took much longer before I was happy with the decor inside.

I tinker way too much as well. I'm down to only doing minor changes in planted tanks now though. Less stress on the fish that way.

I used to do that, then I got happy with what was in there and that it everything was in the best position. It's fun though- moving everything around.

i only manage the plants, in the oscar tank there's no plant so if ever there's anything going on it'll be arrangement of the driftwoods.

i don't like the idea of re-arranging the tank too often. it's like re-arranging your own room for 5 times within the week.

I like the picture of your tank. I just recently took one cave out of another tank and replaced it in another tank of mine. I am always thinking, "what would the fish like?"

yeah thats a vice of mine too. Every time I clean, something gets moved. I just can't stay satisfied with the arrangement of my rocks and plants :D

i think its a normal vice anyone who keeps fish has, honestly. At least for the first few months I did the same thing , especially since I made the move to gradually go to live plants instead of fake ones. Does anyone else notice their fish prefer the live foliage instead of plastic?

I usually redecorate my tanks once a year for a little variety, but if a particular fish has a favorite spot I tend to leave that alone.

I move things around a little every time I do a water change. Nothing major, just a straightening....Don't the fish get spooked when you move stuff around????

My malawi cichlids are always spooked... some of my friends have looked into the tank and ask me why I keep a tank with just water and no fish. So it doesn't make a difference for me ;). That said, I didn't completely destroy the tank... I left enough space for the cichlids to run to the other end of the tank and hide. They've been with me for nearly 2 years now, so I think they got over it :D

Lol...Richer......my Mom is always on me about my severens and parrots. You never see them unles you are across the room. They always hide. Sometimes I feel like taking out all the hiding spots but then I feel guilty about destroying their happy homes.

I guess the real question is Does anyone just do water changes and hasn't touch their Deco for quite some time? Be honest! It's been 3 days since the last time I rearranged my tank....:D
