I have a rock with brown polyps w/green on the inside. 2 of them I never see open, and they're the longest ones. Any ideas why? Ever seen this? They're rather ugly not open.

a pic would help, but they sound like my button poylps. Mine are ugly when closed but they're usually open real wide and show this deep green inside. Have you checked your water specs. They can be finiky about opening if conditions don't seem right. How long have you had the polyps? Sometimes if they're new they can stay closed for quite a while. Some people have had them stay closed over a week after a move from LFS to their tank.

Maybe I'll post a pic sometime. I've had the rock for a month or more. Only the 2 longest stay closed, the rest are always open.

Weird. No idea.

Are they enough taller than the others to be in substantially different water flow?

They're an inch taller. Although the rock has been moved numerous times. Anyone FOR the idea of cutting them in half? I am considering it.

I probably would not--the bottom of the polyp, being surrounded by the others, might become infected and take out the entire colony. I'd leave them alone for a while--corals can often pout if they are moved around too often.

They may be different type of polyps. Their is a type that grows considerably bigger. I've seen it on rocks with the smaller types like the green.
