Adding fish

How many days should the ammonia and nitrite levels remain at 0 before adding new fish? I added two platies a week ago to my 20g (which already has 6 other fish in it as well) and the levels didn't spike at all. Also, the last two kinds of fish I want to add are neon tetras and and a few cories. I know that both can be delicate and sensitive, so which one would be better to add first?

Okay another question. After reading the post on the general fw forum, I am wondering if I should/could get Cardinal tetras instead of neons. I already have 2 neons (after their 5 friends went fins up) and I don't want to repeat the experience.

After a few days of constant , stable test results, you should be ok to think about adding more fish. It would appear that you are doing things correctly by adding the fish gradually.

Personally, i would add the neons after the cories. The cories will be good at cleaning up any uneaten food that sinks to the bottom which would otherwise cause more ammonia to be produced. (JMO though!)

Cardinals are quite fussy with regards to water conditions. They only do well in very stable, very specific conditions (I believe you should almost think of them along the same lines as chocolate gouramis and discus with regards to their water conditions).

In your situation, the neons would be a better they choice. They will also not grow as large. You are probably reaching capacity on that tank (although you don't state what other fish you have in there).

HTH, just my opinions though.
