I have a question pertaining to the hood. I've built it out of goo dold cheapo spruce, now I want to prevent water damage. What do I coat it with? I want to know what is best for the inisde where the moisture level would be really high.

According to what I've read you should paint it with polyurethane-based paint.

I use this:

"Helmsman indoor/outdoor spar urethane is specially formulated to withstand the worst enviromental conditions. Helmsmen provides a finish that protects your wood from rain and moisture."

Good stuff you can find almost anywhere like Home Depot. And has UV protection.

Either will work. I went crazy and put 3 (or 4?) coats of polyurethane on the exterior, 4 or 5 coats of paint on the inside. As long as you have a well fitting glass top and aren't setting the hood over an open tank, you shouldn't have a problem with moisture anyway. Provided that you have some way of air to enter the hood of course.

The paint I use on my stands and hoods you can get from Home Depot-

Glidden Evermore, Interior and Exterior Latex Enamel Hi-Gloss. The Color I use is 7124 White. Costs $20.98 per gallon
