Just checking to see how the tank is coming along. Did you find out some of the regs and stuff that you have to follow? Did you make it to Modern pet yet?

Hi Reefscape,
How are you? The tank's still empty. The only things inside it are all the things I've been gathering for the setup. Protein skimmer, wave maker, power heads and such. My current project (paving stones surrounding the back yard) is almost complete and then the aquarium will move to the front seat.:D
You'll know when I've started 'cause there will be a flood of questions from this newb! ;)
P.S. Oh, I did find some of the regs from the Dept. of Ag folks. You hit the nail right on the head. You're only allowed one gallon of both sand or rock per day. I'm just wanting to find some sand with aragonite to keep my ph high. Once I find that, I'll start my daily trek out to beach with my bucket.

Any white beach sand will be OK for keeping the PH stable. Now, the loophole for collecting things. The regs say that you can not collect any rock with life from the ocean. You can not break any peice of the reef off for collection. The loophole, You can collect coral rubble. This does not state whether it has life on it or not as long as you are not re selling this for a profit as it is for personal use only. So, theoreticly you can collect coral frags with life on them if you wanted to grow the frags. The other catch is collecting rock up on the beach that is out of the water (which I do) that you will find plenty of life on that you can "rescue".

There are ways of doing this stuff.

Reefscape,
I know some guys here on island (Here's their website... http://www.aquariumshawaii.com ) they take coral rubble or base rock and 'glue' it together to make some really unique fabricated reef designs. My question is.. What is the probable 'glue' that they use. My guess is aquarium putty. They also add either purple or red 'highlights' to give the rock a more live look (my guess again would be the putty mixed with a dye of some sort that holds its color very well immersed in water. I've seen were they dye coral rubble all different colors and they say that it holds its color for quite a long time).

That is Steves company which use to be called "Living art". He also knows who I am. Yes he does do those formations but you can do the same thing if you want to. His aquarium styles are the old style which is a very sterile type of an aquarium. You can legaly get the real coraline algae growth on your rocks so IMO there is no need to color the rockwork. You can go to your local hardware store and get casting resin which you find by the surfboard repair stuff. I use this with q-sil and thicksil mixed with sand as well to glue the rocks together. This is what I do for the base rock and then you can add some small "coral rubble" with coraline on it to grow on the rest of the rock. You can also take a scraper and shave off the coraline off of small peices to "seed" everything else. I will see if I can get some pics of a couple of tanks that I have done.

What is q-sil and thicksil? Is this probably the formula they were using? They can make some really nice looking pieces.
So, you know these guys too. I haven't met Steve yet, only Kyle. They've got quite a nice business going. They maintain a lot of the business aquariums around town and offer the companies free usage of their fabricated reefs for as long as they let them maintain their aquariums. I guess that's why they use the color so that they don't have to worry about keeping a live coraline look going.
Can't wait to see the pics of the pieces that you've constructed. You've got me stoked about getting the tank up. I may just take a break from the current project long enough to get it to a spot that I can start collecting the sand and rock.

Hey Reefscape

Were you able to get those pics of your tanks? Also , still wondering what q-sil and thicksil are and where you can get it. Obviously some sort of silicon but brand name?
