I know its algea, I just don't know what type or what to do about it. It is growing in skins on the leaves of my plants and on the surface of the water, blocking out the light. I have to go in every few days to scoop it all out. Sometimes it looks foamy. I tried to get some pictures.

And this is what it looks like when I rub it off the leaves. Its very slippery and just wipes right off, but I can't keep up with it

Because its a heavily planted tank I've been leaving the light on for 12 hours a day. The tank used to be really green and healthy looking, but this algea is blocking the light and killing everything. I only feed every other day. I change 50% of the water every week. I know that the usual solution for algae is to turn the lights off, but won't that harm my plants?

I don't use fertilizers or CO2, as I was doing very well without them until this past month.

My understanding is that short term it won't hurt your plants, 12 hours a day on light may be the problem, my understanding is that around 9-10 is penty for the plants, and wil help with the algea. I am currently learning about all of this as well, so take my comments on this under advisement, and wait for the experts to weigh in.

from what I have been learning that doing that for a few days won't hurt the plants, from what I understand is also if there is natural light lighting the tank you may want to cover with a towl/blanket to block that light out also.
