Yup! I got them! I'm so excited. As of now, I have 1 female and 4 males. I might get more, I'm not too sure yet. They're in quaratine right now. I'll try to snap some pictures later once they've settled in and get more colorful (though the males look very promising; I already see bright pink, green, and deep blue showing up). They'll eventually go into the 55g. We'll just have to make room. It's pretty completely stocked, but my nitrates are too low as it is (for the plants) so I think the water's fine. I'm betting that they'll school with the Celebes:)

Okay, I have to go ogle them now. Just wanted to share. I've wanted them for SO long!

threadfins are awesome. we bought one that was sold as a female and then bought two smaller ones from another place and asked for males. the 3 swim together sometimes but don't really school. they are with celebese, dwarf neons, a lone red irian and a pair of large congo tetras and they are doing awesome. we just moved them into a 65 planted from a 29 fake planted tank about 2 weeks ago and they love the new tank. I have determined the larger one is a male, not female because it stands its top fin straight in the air for display. they are awesome, you don't even realize that fin exists till it pops up there. we are going to get more rainbows so once we find all the types we can, I hope we still have room for more threadfins and celebese because they're my favorites. Kyle

Refresh my memory
What are threadfins again?
those slender fish with the blue eyes and long dorsal and anal fins?

THey're these:

Thats not even a good picture, IMO.

I've had celebes forever...threadfins are basically the same thing with a bit different structure (and are slightly less hardy).

Snake - the difference should be very easy to tell. Females do not have any long fins...males have extremely pronounced finnage. It's just like the Celebes. I dont' have any threadfin pics yet...but I do have a male/female Celebes pic I'll show in case anyone wants to know the difference:

The female is on the left, with a displaying male next to her.

I had like 4 of those in my 110 gallon
died off one by one by one.
not very hardy , in my opinion.
the most hardy things in my tank are the bottom feeders, which never die (flying foxes, CAE, pleco)

Ok, I got some really quick ones. They blurred a bit when I resized them...

Their colors will look much, much more vibrant once they're in a planted tank and out of this one (and it's light gravel doesn't help them any).

It's hard to tell in these pics: Their tales are flourescent pink. Their dorsal and anal fins are black/dark blue at the ends and yellow/green near the bases. Their bodies are metallic blue/silver.

The female looks very, very odd. She is very clear and has pitch black, beady little eyes. They should blue with a black pupil...I kind of wonder if she's blind. Something is up with her. Honestly, she's very ugly. I might get another female.

I'm happy I found them - but I wish they hadn't been 8$ a piece:eek:. Who the heck gets to determine that:mad:

want me to really make you sick? I found an LFS in San Antonio Texas that has a "mixed rainbow" tank that includes celebese, threadfin and dwarf neons for 98 cents a piece! I paid around 4-6 dollars a piece for the ones I have. KYle

Snake - Yah, that's disgusting. Honestly, however, Ive wanted these fish so bad that I'd have probably paid 15$ a piece! Don't anyone tell my store that.

Mogurnda - thanks:) I hope to get some more pics soon - hopefully of them flaring at each other. I really don't know how long I can wait before putting them in the 55g!
