is ordering fish online a good idea? anyone have any experience with them?

most of my lfs are kinda shady and although easier to select the fish they still dont have that great a selection, almost no plants at all, and are stingy with returns.

Some LFS will special order for you if they are placing an order anyway. Have you asked them if they will do that? Ordering online can be good or bad just like any local purchase. It can be a lot more expensive though because of the shipping.

Hello,

I have bought live plants online but not fish and to be buys cost way TOO MUCH with the shipping prices on them. I buy my plants from Tycom-1. She sells on ebay and I think her prices are good and shipping is cheap. I just bought like $35 in plants and the shipping only cost me like $7 . They were in great shape and she has always sent more then what states in her auction. She will ever work with you on packages that you want.. Check her out on ebay or you can check out her site it's www.tycom-1.net

The poor quality of Discus here in central Florida 'forced' us to buy online. All eight were bought from "A Discus Dream" in Ohio and are doing great!

If you do buy online and have them 'flown in', go and pick them up at the airport -- don't let them sit on some truck somewhere in the heat while waiting on a front door home delivery!

Research who you are buying from, and also give them a phone call. See if they are serious about what they sell. I had real bad 'luck' with someone in Arizona.

I purchased once from http://www.**************** and had a good experience. The fish were in individual bags, packed in styrofoam, and had a little heat pack to keep everything warm during shipping. Their prices seem to be pretty good, their selection is great, and they seem to know their stuff. The only problem is the shipping of course. There is no minimum order, and there is a flat-rate shipping fee of $24.75.

i just got 4 bettas from aquabid that arrived this morning. they were supposed to come yesterday at noon but nooooo-usps decided they were going to ship my package to georgia and not alabama! the fish were coming from florida-its not that hard to ship a box from FL to AL. luckily they were all alive and seem to be doing well now. i have had bettas shipped before from usps express and had no problem. this time-im still grinding my jaw and making meanie faces at the post office for misrouting my box and making me worry.
i have only ordered bettas in the mail though. they do better than other fish in shipping so im not sure if i would take the plunge and order another type of fish.

I have bought fish, corals and plants online. There are online vendors I trust a lot more than the LFSs here, and the livestock have always come in looking good. Big orders are best, since a small order can become very expensive with shipping.

http://www.**************** has a page devoted to explaining how they ship their fish. it seems to be pretty nice. i've never ordered anything from them, but i'm considering it. if i do, they're who i'll be getting them from.
