ive noticed the rena xp3 and penguin 330 is rate abotu teh same GPH, only the xp3 can do up to 175 gallon tank, and the 330 can do a 70

my guess is the rena can hold more media???

cubic inches per hour

Yes, the 330 has two cartridges plus 2 pockets for additional media of your choice. The total volume is probably way less than that of the XP3, I'd guess at less than 1/3rd, but i don't know.

If you flow through 3x the media you ought to remove 3x the wastes.

My understanding ( and please know that I haven't checked this out myself) is that cannisters rate higher not only because of the extra media capacity, but also because they force more water through the media, whereas most Hob's will bypass the media when it begins to fill with debris.
