My ten gallon tank just finished cycling (fishy cycle) and I was wondering if I could put in another fish. I currently have 2 serpae tetras, 2 longfin blackskirts, and a pleco (i know he gets to big, trying to find him a new home). This fish will all be going in to a 46 gallon tank soon(i hope soon anyway). Could I possibly put like a dwarf gourami in the 10 gallon until my 46 finishes cycling?

You should be okay but if it's a fish you don't have yet, wait till the 46 is done cycling, then put him in there. No need to crowd the tank if a bigger tank is on the horizon.

Patience is a big thing in this hobby. Relax, your time will come, or actually, the new tanks time will come. Don't overstress the fish by moving him from one tank to another in a short period of time. Let him learn the new tank right off and find his place. Have you seen the honeydrop dwarf? I want a few of them.

yeah, i've seen those. they are very nice looking. oh, and i know this is off topic, but for the 46 gallon, what would be a nice fish to have to give me some activity near the upper levels of the tank? My serpaes and blackfins seem to stay near the middle/bottom of the tank, and i would like some activity near the top.

Black skirt tetras are a little too nippy to keep slowing moving fish with, the same with the serpae tetras. I would stick to fish from the same region. Mixing fish from other parts of the world never really works out well. If anything you should be getting more tetras, they need to be in groups of 5 or more to be happy. I suggest getting 3 more of each tetra.

I agree - more tetras of the same type to shoal. A couple of tetra look nice in a tank but once you get the group upto six or above they become much more interesting.

Different types will shoal together but only if your lucky and not all the time. My cardinals and my glowlights shoal togther from time to time.

I decided not to get any new fish until the 46 gallon is cycled. I had already planned on filling out the schools of the tetras once they are in the big tank. Others have said that the gourami would be fine with the tetras in the 46, so I will probably get one once the big tank is ready.
