Substrate for ...

Setting up a pair of 30 gal. for Convicts and Firemouths. What kind of substrate do they prefer? Only gonna have a few artifical plants and a piece of slate for the Firemouths. Do they like sand or small, movable gravel? Fixing setup so need to know which to do.

I'd go for a course sand/fine gravel. Small enough for them to be able to sift through and dig.
