On the Ehiem Canister filter range (2211-2217) i notice that there is no priming bulb. so how would one go about priming this filter? Also can the return pipe be placed under the surface of the water to reduce surface aggitation? Any good or bad experiences with this filter?

The classic series Eheims are not self-priming. That series are basic workhorse canisters w/o bells and whistles, just high efficiency and long life. You reassemble the filter, slip the Python intake tube over the water return and turn on the tap so the python primes the canister for you. Alternately use a squeeze bulb or your mouth to start the intake siphon.

I never have the return above water level, even in unplanted tanks. Too much noise and splash for me. Mine are always below the water level.

HTH

PS: The 2211 has been discontinued unfortunately, although it was still on Eheim's web site the last time I was there.
