I am gettting a 55 gallon tank and wondering what sorts of fish to put in was thinking maybe start with some big chicleds like maybe africans or something unique

For a 55, I would lean towards medium size fish like Firemouths. Rainbow cichlids might also work. Kribensis. I assume you only want one species in the tank?
There are other considerations, like the water in your area. If you live in an area with hard water, it might be best to keep fish that like hard water, like the ones from the Rift Lakes.

this will be the first time with something larger than my 20, its going to be used from a friend of mine who used it for a sw reef tank so I know its been kept chem clean
I would have thought the water harder still not sure how to convert the drops from the tetra test to parts per million but the results were like 6 drops for the Kh and Gh was like 7 on the last test. My normal test day involves all the tests and is tomorrow. I test ph every week Gh and Kh every other week unless I change something as my tap water is tested a day after I pull from the tap since it flutuates almost daily in asheville NC. If there are any fishy minded people in the area I would love input from a local.
For a 55g consider two Uaru's or two Severums. They are both medium sized Cichlids with loads of personality.
