They virtually eliminate the 'cycle'. If there are enough of them, they take up all the the nutrients produced during the cycle.

Assumign of course that you stuff your aquarium with fast growing stem plants and duckweed. The so called silent cycle does work well with light fish loads in my experience.
 
Live IF things are correct for growth

IF you have enough light for the plants you buy, then live plants are best.

Wait a minute... the plants you guys are talking about in this forum are alive? So I don't need CO2 injection for my plastic plants?

Once you go with live plants, you'll never go back to plastic again.....

Actually I think that live plants have (overall) been LESS work for me - I was constantly cleaning algae off the plasitc ones.

Anyway, to answer the question, live easy care low light plants are much better than plastic IMO.
