i was wondering then, with the controversial 1 inch rule, i have a 30 g tank and the largest fish are the dwarf gouramis. does this then mean i can add a few more fish?

The idea here is that it is not just about how many inches of fish you have, or the largest fish you have, but how many fish you have and what kinds. (among other variables)

okay, so could you help with a couple pointers then.
i have 2 platies
4 neons
4 harliquins
4 cory's
4 otto's
a kuhli loach
and i plan on getting a male dwarf gouramis
and 2 female gouramis
i also wanted to get 4 zebra danios and possibly a swordtail or a lyretail
is this too much?

I would say yes, that will be a very crowded tank. Plus you will be hard pressed to find female gouramis, unless you are one of the lucky ones whose fish store actually carries them. It is reasonable to have a male gourami without any females, unless of course you are trying to breed them (which could never happen in a community tank).

no i'm not planning on breeding them though my lfs does carry them, i have 2 on hold right now, paid for and everything, along with the male, i just need to pick them up.
same with the danios.
i haven't really considered a sword or a lyertail, they just look really neat and i have thought about it.
since i'm still new with all this i wanted to see what you experts could say about it.

Make sure your tank has lots of line of sight breaks. Generally gouramis (like their betta cousins) can get aggressive when it comes to mating and with each other generally. If there are breaks in the sight line (plants etc...) the aggression is generally lessened.
