Given that loaches tend to dig themselves into the substrate, or under decor, it's probably best that fine gravel or sand be used.

However, can anyone advise on how they make out with standard aquarium gravel? Can they dig, and is there a high risk of injury? Or will they thrive just as well under those conditions. I'm thinking of a couple of khuli loaches for my tank.

I've had kuhli loaches in both sand and gravel, and honestly, they dig into small gravel much better than they do into sand.

I agree, my five loaches love playing around in the 3mm black i use. They wherent fused on the sand i used to use but that might be just the loaches.

Cheers
Nick

If I can find them at the lfs, I might give them a try then.

Thanks.

My LFS had a tank that was teeming with khulie loaches.
yes, had . Most were dead when I checked two days after I first saw them healthy, and the ones remaining were desperately trying to wriggle into this jeweled plastic gravel thing to no avail.

So yes, for khulies, I would most certainly recommend a fine substrate.
