I was wondering, does a canister have to be set up under a tank or could it be next to it? I have my tank pretty much close to the floor.

I was debating about getting a small eheim ecco for my 10 gallon (and also to have it handy in case any new tanks come along :)). Would the ecco rated for 35 gallon aquarium be too big for a 10 gallon? Thanks :)

My Eheim manual (for a 2228 Professionel) simply states that the bottom of the canister must be no more than 5'11" below the surface of the water. I would think you could set the filter next to it.

The less distance the water has to be lifted back into the tank, the less work the pump has to do, I would think.

I have ran mine next to the tank for limited amounts of time. The only thing that is hard with it not below is in priming/filling the filter. With it below just need to start the siphon and gravity does the rest.

as long as the intake buit wasnt above the water line you would have no probs. Its always nice to hide filters away tho umless you need constant access to them
