At the nature center I work at we have a "peanut" shaped pond in the outdoor lizard exhibit. It's a preformed pond holding maybe 20-25 gallons. It is buried in the mulch and their is no pumps or filters- it just gets rain water and I do clean it out periodically.

However it is full of wrigglers- mosquito larvae.

I put two big female mosquitofish in there already as they were the only two to survive the trip from the lake.

Do I need to add more? Is there another type of fish I could add?

Only box turtles and green iguanas are in the exhibit.

Thanks

Be careful about mosquito fish, they multiply at a rapid rate if you have both males and females. Last summer we put about 10 in each of our ponds. Now they number in the high hundreds.

I'm not sure of where you are located, so I couldn't be specific. But with something that small you would want to add only a few small fish. Mosquito fish are very hard and when you have several, the way they swim ripples the water so you do get some oxygenation.

How deep is the pond? You may be able to put a small catfish or something in there.

Be careful what you put in with mosquito fish, if there are very many of them, they can get pretty mean. I had a group of them one time just attack a slightly larger goldfish (approx 2"). Poor guy never stood a chance.

I just want something to eat the mosquitoe larvae so they don't hatch and infect the lizards (or me) with diseases.
