on a 75gal (48 x 18 x 21) not planted at this time with the following fish

8 red swords (5 females, 3 males)
6 cories (2 different sets of 3)
6-8 zebra danios or congo tetras or 4 rainobow fish
4 angels
1-2 bristlenose pleco
1 rainbow shark

since at big al's the price difference is only $14 between the 2.

Are the 280's good enough because i am kind of thinking that 2 400's on the 75g would be close to over kill.

I think either setup would work. I personally would prefer two filters over one because of the redundancy in case one fails.

My Emps have been pretty reliable, but it never hurts to prepare for a problem...

You mean 2 280's or 2 400's right?

Well for the fish you have right now, I would go with 280's. Remember, you're paying for the extra power and filter cartridges as well, not just the filter unit itself when you buy the 400 over the 280. You definitly don't need 2 400's (as that is about 800gph, but in actuallity, a little less) with the fish you have after accounting for the above. But if you were gonna plant that tank and add a lot more fish, you might want to look at 2 400's a little more closely.

My opinion: Go with 2 280's, maybe a 280 and a 400 if you really worried and plan on adding more fish. For the tank you described though, 2 280's should do the trick.
