just started the tank two weeks ago and have been battleing with nitrites and nitrates i have 30 pounds of live rock a powerhead protein skimmer i bought yesterday plus having a H.O.T. filter all in a 29 gallon

Someone certainly may correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you want those to come down on their own if you're cycling your tank. I believe it's because you're making bacteria to devour the nitrites as well as the ammonia, but I'm not sure. My nitrites were high and dropped suddenly, same with the nitrates, and now my tank is cycled.

I agree....with only 2 weeks time your nitrates and nitrites probably should be high....is your ammonniz also high?
If it is not, then this is probably a sign that the cycle is working.

It took me about 6 weeks to get my tank fully cycled.....

ammonia is in in the safe zone ,ive added half a dozen "not so" turbo snails i guess they are doing well , i guess they are just adjusting to the tnak still

well with your ammonia low, it is probably a sign that your cycle is doing what it should do....after the ammonia lowers, nitrates/nitrites tend to build up.....you should first see a build of nitrite, then nitrate towards the end of the cycle.
