alright, I wanna add a sponge to my filter intake I bought one at the store, I couldn't find any that didn't ha e bacterial odor reister things, anti-microbial technology, not sure what it is, but will it kill the fish is the first question, and if so, how do I get rid of it.

This doesn't sound very reassuring to me. I wouldn't trust it. It must have some type of chemical in it in order to wipe out all of the microorganisms right?
How would you make a sponge that prevented bacteria growth? Anti-bacterial chemicals is the only thing I can think of.
It would be like using bleach to clean your biological filter during maintenance. Putting that sponge on the intake to your filter would probably lead to a quick death of your nitrifying bacteria.
thats what I was afraid of. I am doing alot of rinsing. I will do it on a test with my newt cage, since he rarely goes into the water anyways. that guy is a machine, lived through a house fire and still kicking strong great fun to watch him eat a minnow man. had im about a year now. thanks for that input
I don't think I'd try it on your newts habitat, it could be harmful to him as well. What I would do is just go buy another sponge that would be safe for aquarium use. If Watcher says it is for treating rainwater then it will probably not rinse out.

I wouldn't use it. Almost any anti-bacterial will be harmfull to your fish. I get sponges from big Al's, given the time they last for, the cost is almost non-existant.

I've read posts from people who simply used a new sponge to clean out a tank prior to filling it and killed all their fish.
Go to the pet store and look for either an AC sponge or a FilterMax3 or some of the prefilter sponges made for fish tanks.
I've read on SimplyDiscus that there is a car washing sponge that folks have used as a prefilter. You might pop over to SimplyDiscus and read in the Newbie section about Sponge Prefilters, it is a sticky at the top of the posts. In that long discussion several options were presented, all sucessfully used by discus people.
I use a chunk of black foam that I bought from Big Al's for ~$5, 3"x5"x12" and I just cut whatever I need and make and X in it with a steak knife for the hole.
