Is this a pretty good canister filter? I would be putting it on a 55g. It is pretty cheap. It says it's for up to 100g tanks, but I doubt that is true. I don't know much about them.

Magnum 350

If it sucks, the other one I am looking at is a Filstar XP2.

Magnum 350's are good filters...I don't like them as canisters though. I've used it and find it to be a pain, thats just me though. If you're willing to spend money, I would go with an Eheim...it's slight overkill but I love mine. You can find enough info on that through this website; the only downside is the cost (you're looking at about $170 initial startup,) but you rarely ever have to change the media (couple times a year,) and I only open mine up to clean it about every 3-4 months, (although I probably should a bit more often.) My Magnum 250 gets opened about every 1-2 weeks, and the 350 wouldnt be any different.

If you're not set on a canister, you would do fine with a HOB - Hang on the Back - filter like a Whisper or Emperor for a 55G

I already have enough HOB filters for a 55. I want a canister to stop that trickling noise. If it is worth it, I'll spend the extra $15-20 and get the Filstar.

$170 is almost double what I was wanting to pay. It would be nice though. I'll do some more lurking around tomorow.

Thanks

go with the filstar, i have heard nothing but horrible things about the magnums, and nothing but good things about the renas

Then a Magnum 350 will quickly become a closet counterweight. Every one I've seen clacked and whirred and buzzed like a swarm of bumblebees playing patty-cake. Eheim is the quietest thing I've ever seen. I've never used a Filstar, but have heard they are good too.
