Is this normal??????????

Shekoi

Trying to start up again
I have 5 cory juilli in my 35g. when they are looking for food around the bottom my 2 sworntails follow them. then when the corys find pellets or waffers etc the sworntails dive in and swim off with the food.:shake:  :mad2

i feed them twice a day with different foods from flakes to freeze dried foods.:(

Also my male sworn tail is very thin towards ones i've seen in the LFS. i've had him since he was a very small juvenile, about 5 months ago, he has grown from just under and inch to over 2inches in length but has never got any fatter, he is only around 1cm in depth. the female is more then twice his depth and always has been.
i've also had no fry from the pair.

is there a problem with him?? :sad

The swordtails follow the cories around because the cories are good at finding food on the bottom, and of course, the swordtails want that food :D.

As for your male swordtail, it's hard to say if their is anything wrong with him, a picture might help. From the sounds of it though, I wouldn't think there is anything wrong, females are almost always larger and fatter than the males. As for the fry, IME, swordtails actively hunt out and eat their own fry so telling whether they have had any fry or not would be hard to tell. Also, the fact that he has grown at a decent pace also is encouraging.

My swordtails do the exact same with my albino cories.

As for the male, I wouldn't worry as long as he's eating and swimming normally and isn't showing any strange growths.

I brought up 4 swordtail fry (I just let the rest get eaten since I didn't have room), 3 were males, all from the same parents. One male was a big albino; one was small, stayed small but grew a great tail and picked on the big albino; and the other resembled his father (RIP) but a bit bigger.

In other words, don't worry, there are as many variations, even within the same genes, in fish as in people.

Try getting some sinking pellet food. Wardley's Shrimp pellets are great, or any other tablet for bottom feeders. They will be too heavy for the swordtails to take away. They may be able to nibble on them but the cories will also get plenty. I drop 1 per 2 cories of the shrimp pellets.
