Hi,

I have 2 Firemouths 1 of each sex. I have had them about 5/6 months but they are still relatively small and haven't really grown in comparisson to the 2 Albino Convicts I got same time which are now practically fully grown adults. I also remember that my Red Devil grew at an astonishing rate in my other tank and so did my Jacks.

Is it normal for Firemouths to grow in size slowly as it is the first time I have kept these fish? Tank conditions are perfect and I keep a healthy varied diet using Live, Frozen, Flake and pellets etc and just wondering why they seem to take so long to grow to a decent size?

Also regarding the same tank does anyone have any ideas about adding an algae eater to the tank (DO NOT WANT A PLEC) here's the tank details and stock etc:-

100 Imperial Gallons
1 Mature Male Convicts
2 Albino Junior Convicts
2 Junior Jewels
2 Junior Firemouths
1 Adult Angel
1 Junior Pictus
2 Network Catfish

Still looking to add more stock of similar/suitable breeds to the tank.

Thx,
Josh

I have yet to become an expert on FM's but have had a few over the years. Mine have always grown very slowly. The one I have now was barely over 5/8" long when I got him, and is up to almost 1.5" but in the meantime my JD and my Oscar are growing well over twice as fast. One of the things I've notced this time around as well is that FM's love live food, not feeder fish so much (although he will eat them) but worms and escpecially snails. I am growing snails as fast as possible and still can't get enough to make him happy. he shows far better color and attitude when there are live snails for him to chomp. I feed cichlid pellets as a staple, and mix in a lot of larvea, worms shrimp snail and some veggies. With most cichlids I've owned, diet greatly effects growth rate.
