I hear you talk about how your tanks are generally very successful, so id like to follow in your footsteps, basically.

All ive got now is a 55g tank, metal stand, 10g tank (for sump i suppose) and a Berlin Turbo in-sump skimmer.

Lighting is basic 40w flourescents.

So where do i go from here?

Can you describe one of your successful 55g (give or take) setups? I know you recommend the emperor 400 filters and ill probably get those.

My customers think they are and keep reccomending me. But you have to understand, as I say so often say: I do things different than most. I do things others that are also successful think are crazzy.

So here goes. Before we go any farther I would want to know what you plan to keep. It affects Lighting, Flow, and the amount of substrate and LR.

But I'm curious. I also suspect you're pragmatic rather than crazy. Cookbook for a 55 gallon FOWLR please?

Once Again, what is the Must have fish in the tank? Second, I hate 55 gallon tanks. They are too shallow front to back. I no long will take on a new customer with a 55 gallon tank.

I'm looking to start a 150 gal. (tall) FOLWR system. All I have is the tank...no other equipment. I want as little live rock as possible. The must have fish is a Dog Faced Puffer. What other tank mates would you suggest, as well?

OK, Must have fish are a Chaetodon kleinii and a small medium angel - bicolor or Apolomicthys xanthurus - reasonably hardy but not bulletproof fish. Also I need to be able to leave it to travel for a week at a time

You picked some interesting fish. the bicolor angelfish is a fish that has a bad rep due to most being cyanide caught. If net caugh (use a MAC Certified dealer for this fish) it is a very nice fish that should do well if acclimated correctly. The Apolomicthys xanthurus or Indian Yellowtail Angelfish grows to about 8 inches and therefore will outgrow a 55 gallon tank in about a year. But it is a hardy fish. The Chaetodon kleinii is a great choice IMO for a 55.

Would you mind changing 3 - 5 gallon buckets of water every week?

The Dog Faced Puffer ( Arothron nigropunctatus) is a hardy fish that can grow to 13 inches ( I've seen others that say 16 inches). In A one 150 I would keep 2 of them and may 2 other fish that would not be considered food or be too aggressive. I would use them to add color. You can pretty much set the tank up as you wish. The puffer has not real need for bright lights; so use what looks good to you. They are not a fish with a flow requirement other than not to blow them away. Low to med. flow works fine for them.

You want as little LR as possible. I usually use a good amount and live sand. I then use a wide variety of detrivores in large numbers to help keep a tank looking clean. Less live rock and no LS means you need more filtration in other ways and maybe more water changed. Is this OK?

Thanks! Best advice I've heard as of yet. With the Dog Faced, wouldnt he eat pretty much all of the detrivores? I have a 30 gal. freshwater set up with an African Pig Faced/Arrowhead Puffer in it. Every time I put a snail, shrimp, etc, in the tank, they're immediately eaten. Is it the same way with salt water puffers? Would you recommend any type of eel to go with the puffer? I was wanting either a Snowflake or some kind of small shark (i.e. Banded Cat Shark, Bamboo, etc.)? Last question...what would you recommend for filtration? I have 3 Whisper 60s that my LFS said would be fine and that I should add a few power heads. Do you think I'll need a protein skimmer, etc?
