I've set up my tank a few weeks ago and while doing my water changes etc... I haven't cleaned the gravel yet and I'd like to get a vacuum to do so. Problem is I've never used one so I don't really know how they work and before buying one I'd like to know how they work and what's a good and cheap one for a 10 gallon? I was looking at bigal's online and they have a homebrand one at $9.99 and a python one at $19.99 and some other brands that varies between that. Also, do I need to connect this to my sink? That would be a problem since my tank is in my room and I have no sink easily available around the room.

Also, another question, I was thinking of getting the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Freshwater Master Test Kit at bigals and it was $29.99 CAD, is that a good price or should I wait around and shop and is it really worth it?

Thanks!

if you get a cheap gravel vac, they usually just siphon into a bucket when you do your water changes.I'm not sure about the test kit though.

I bought the Tetra test kit for $30 at BA's. It's good but doesn't have a lot of things like nitrATE, potassium, phosphate tests because those are pretty specialized I guess.

Usually you vacuum into a bucket. You can buy a waterbed fill & drain kit for like $5 and make your own python. You can buy a 50 foot garden hose and a shut off valve for it. That way you don't have to carry large buckets of water all the time.

If your tank has only been up for a few weeks is it fully cycled? I got a small gravel vac from PetSmart for $2.50. The Python's & such are going to be much too large for a 10g tank.

I suggest going to the LFS and telling them that you don't know how to use one and could they show you on oone of their tanks??? At our store we still clean ours by hand with a syphon and I always have people comem up to me and say "OH thats how that works!!"

Good Luck
