Hi all,

i have a 110 gallon cichlid tank (i don't think this sickness is limited to cichlids so thus the thread here) anyway, one of my fish got some kind of fungus 2 weeks ago. the fish remained active but his "lips" began to swell with a white kind of "fungus" it protruded to around a 1/4" of an inch and then he was gone. My sevrum now has the same beginning symptoms. Water quality is OK and and water changes take place every 2 to 3 weeks.

I'm very frustrated, thanks for your help!

Does it look cotton-like? Removing the affected fish to a hospital tank is always a good idea. Isolate them from the healthy stock first, then worry about diagnosing and treating.

Other, more experienced, fishkeepers can be a little more helpful, but it may be that a dose of melafix is all that's required.

I agree with happchem... if it's cottony looking stuff, then melafix will definately help the problem... I had that a long time ago on one of my gouramis. Just remember to take the carbon out of your filter (if you have any in there) while treating w/ the melafix.

Extra water changes would help too! Good luck!

If it is cottonmouth, then it's bacterial and the bacteria that causes it is thought to be present in all aquariums. Most likely your fish has just gone through a period of stress leaving it vulnerable to infection.
